What are the principles of Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is based on certain principles depending on which it works towards improving the quality of life. Either you visit a Ayurvedic practioner or are looking for Online Ayurvedic Consultations, these are the principles based on which you will be provided guidance.

Panchamahabhutas

Ayurveda believes that everything in the universe is formed of  5 elements : Akasha (space), Vayu(air), Agni(fire),  Jala (water) and Prithvi (earth). In a human body ‘akasha’ conforms with the spaces in the body ( mouth, nostrils etc.), ‘vayu’ refers to the movements (muscular), ‘agni’ controls the proper functioning of enzymes, ‘jala’ comprises of all the body fluids and ‘prithvi’ of all the solid structures. So, the ‘panchamahabhutas’ serves as the basis for every diagnostic and treatment in Ayurveda.

Trigunas

There are three essentials energies of the mind, which are the ‘gunas’- Satva, Rajas and Tamas. Although every individual comprises of the three ‘gunas’, however, the predominate ‘guna’ regulate an individual’s mental state or ‘mansa prakriti’.

“Satva” dominant individuals are usually spiritual and virtuous in nature, “ Rajas”dominant individuals are full of passion and are vulnerable of temptations and “Tamas”dominant individuals are the one with lack of intelligence and unsteadiness. These “gunas” balance the healthy mental state and any imbalance leads to disorders.

Tridosas – ‘Vata’, ‘pitta’ and ‘kapha’ are three ‘doshas’ or energy that govern the human body. These ‘doshas’ are responsible for every physical, mental and emotional propensity of human being.

Saptadhatus – The ‘saptadhatus’or seven elements form the pillars of the human body. Rasa Dhatu(fluid), Rakt Dhatu (blood), Mamsa Dhatu, Meda Dhatu (fat), Asthi Dhatu (bone), Majja Dhatu and Shukra Dhatu comprises of the ‘dhatus’in human body.

Trimalas – ‘Malas’ are the waste products of the body, i.e; “purisa” (faeces), “Mutra”(urine) and “Sveda” (sweat). According to Ayurveda, a balance of ‘doshas’, ‘dhatus’ and ‘malas’  is the key to good health.

Trayodashaagni – Trayodashaagni is the biological fire that rules the human body and confines all the changes of the body, such as, digestive, metabolism, mental, emotional etc.
